Jama Masjid Shujaiya: The Center of Knowledge and Spirituality

Jama Masjid Shujaiya, constructed before the Charminar and Mecca Masjid, is a large mosque located at the corner of the bustling market in Hyderabad, northeast of the historic Charminar. It is one of the most beautiful architectural marvels of its kind in India.

Jama Masjid Shujaiya is situated in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It was built in 1597 AD by the fifth Sultan of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the founder of Hyderabad, under the supervision of Mir Jumla Ameen-ul-Mulk. The mosque is built on a platform with seven arches, seven rows, and a beautifully designed entrance crowned with magnificent domes. Inside, there is a grand central arch made of black granite with verses from the Quran elegantly inscribed on it. The mosque also features a courtyard with a beautiful water pond, setting it apart from other mosques in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The building has two tall minarets at its corners.

The architecture of Jama Masjid is unique and holds great significance. It is also famous due to the presence of spiritual personalities of South India, such as Hazrat Yusuf Baba Rahmatullah Alaih and Hazrat Shareef Baba Rahmatullah Alaih, who came to this mosque along with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. Hazrat Qutb-ul-Hind Hafiz Syedna Mir Shujauddin Hussain Rahmatullah Alaih later came from Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, and reestablished the prominence of this mosque. In 1800 AD, he founded the first Madrasa here for the memorization of the Quran, and through a royal decree, the mosque was named Jama Masjid Shujaiya.

The management (custodianship) of this mosque remains with the descendants of Hazrat Shujauddin Hussain Rahmatullah Alaih. The current custodian is Hazrat Maulana Syed Shah Obaidullah Qadri Asif Pasha, the grandson of Hazrat Syedna Mir Shujauddin Hussain Qibla Rahmatullah Alaih.
